This is the all-new A4 Avant, the best-selling compact luxury estate. The A4 Avant shares its underpinnings and key dimensions with the saloon, which means a much-longer wheelbase than the outgoing A4 and a footprint that’s grown to be close to the old A6. In fact at 490 litres the boot, with seats up, is a touch bigger than the old A6.

The Anti-Godzilla: A sportster that's everything Nissan's mighty GTR is not
By Frank Markus
This year's high-performance headlines are all about Nissan's gigantus GTR, a two-ton nuke lobbed at Newton's laws of physics. Meanwhile, way below the fold in mouse type we read that Lotus has quietly strengthened its longstanding alliance with fellow Brit, Sir Isaac, by introducing an Elise with Exige S power and 63 fewer pounds worth of "resistance to motion."

Lexus being notorious for its reliability and refinement aswel as having a good image lives up to all those things with the IS200!

I bought this car after owning a Focus ST so I wasn't overly impressed with the performance, but on the plus side this is more along the lines of being built for comfort and cruising and not performance thrills, if its this car you want AND performance to match buy the IS300.

The car looks the part and it speaks for itself as Lexus didn't give this car a face lift in its long 7 year production, and of course you have the bonus of driving the car that started the worldwide trend for 'Lexus' lights!

Interior is very modern, some say a bit too funky, but you get used to it and if its the contemporary look you like you will like this, very solid and soundly put together not to mention the levels of standard equipment, electric tilt/slide 'moonroof' climate control, electric/heated seats, power sensitive steering and power folding mirrors to mention a few.

So the car otsself is overall is indeed a good buy at the right age, meaning I wouldn't advise you go out and spend the asking price of some late models that are in the 15k pus bracket when you can grab a 4/5 year old example for under 8k, nearly half, the only benefit of the high price tags on later models being the newer plate and lower mileage, but as these cars are said to get better with age and mileage why bother!

On the down side if your running an auto they can be juicy and taking into account the price of a litre at todays forecourts you looking at a £70 fill for 350-400 miles per tank! Ouch!

Servicing can also be expensive especially at Lexus, but there are plenty of independent garages around to offer the same standard and the non main dealer stamp shouldn't make that much of a difference to the resale value which as it goes is very good, holding its value very well and the cheapest you will find will be in the 5k plus bracket and that's for a high mileage early example!

I would advise anyone who is thinking along the lines of the 3 series, C-Class, A4 route to seriously consider the Lexus IS200, but if its performance you want as mentioned before don't expect it, if its luxury, refinement, reliability and satisfaction you want get looking at the classifieds under Lexus now cos' it they certainly don't come much better tan in this car!

Front ball joints which are known for wear on these cars.

Front and rear discs and pads.

Fog lights seized up and needed replacing.

Do a LOT of driving, and decided, that being the case, I want to drive something fun. (And yet still practical for an outdoorsy, active couple with kids gone, but not off the vine!)

This Jag fills the bill! It is quick, responsive, handles as though on rails, absolutely stable at speed (had it up to 130 mph once - stable as a rock), and is accompanied by the sweetest exhaust note I've ever heard. The car seems almost alive. It is a total blast to drive!

Winter handling, once equipped with proper winter tires, is superb. With all wheel drive, traction control, and dynamic stability control, it is utterly unflappable. Got caught twice in wicked spring blizzards; 4 inches of heavy, wet snow on top of icy slush; and the car didn't even quiver, much less slip, slide or skid. Inspires total confidence.

Gas mileage is averaging 25 mpg combined, with about 80% highway driving. That's usually at least 70 mph and often 80. When I keep it at 60 mph, it gets over 30 mpg, but I just can't seem to do that very often!

Driving comfort is very good; the well bolstered sport seats are very comfortable, and the climate control system is excellent (although on Auto, it cranks up too boisterously, and I have to turn it down so I can hear to shift! Once it achieves your set temp., it operates unobtrusively.) I'm over 6 feet tall, and have no trouble behind the wheel, with plenty of headroom, even with the sunroof. Back seats are good for two, but cramped with three adults; my three girls wouldn't want to go on a long ski with bulky clothes on, they say! With it's Sport suspension and 18" low profile tires, the ride is certainly not plush, but it is far from harsh; more reassuringly firm. It pounds a bit only on bad cracks in asphalt. Bottom line - my wife enjoys the ride.

On reliability and dealer service, my only complaint thus far was as a result of a dealer mistake. Another dealer fixed the alignment at no cost to me without quibble. My only disappointment was that Jaguar Canada would not consider reimbursing me for the front tires that were scrubbed off before the problem was recognized. After over 9,000 miles of driving, no problems at all. Still enjoying it immensely.

Wheel alignment needed doing at 19,000 miles. (Due to improper alignment done previously.)

Front tires needed replacing due to faulty alignment aforementioned.

A lovely car. I am now a German car convert.

The build quality cannot be faulted. The handling is perfect although it does take some getting used to as the car is quite heavy.

My previous car was a Nissan 200SX and the Audi feels very tall and solid in comparison, although the steering is light and responsive.

The previous owner opted for the full wood kit, so the entire dash is walnut and good quality as well. All other trim is solid and in good condition.

The V6 twinned with a very smooth automatic box makes for a luxurious ride. The box reacts to my driving style well and when relaxed you hardly notice the gear changes. In fact the rev counter can remain static when driving in town.

The downside of this box is the lack of immediate performance when overtaking.

In my Nissan I could chance overtaking in the tightest of situations, but I wouldn't dare in the Audi.

In fact I would say the Audi has made me a far more relaxed driver. I drive the car simply for the pleasure of driving.

Handling is very good. The Nissan was dangerous in the wet and although I still worry about losing traction the Audi has not failed me yet, even under the worst of conditions.

Servicing is expensive. It cost £150 to have the wheels aligned, and since you cannot have them aligned at Quick-Fit or similar places you have no choice, but to go to the main dealer.

The roof is excellent. I tried several cars before this and the action of the roof is the best. For example, the Saab has no built in roof cover when it's down.

The only problem with the roof is the rear window. I really wish Audi had put a glass rear window in, as the existing plastic window is showing severe signs of damage, including misting which reduces visibility.

The half leather half material seats are comfortable and supportive, much better than the Nissan. I would have liked electric seats and the mechanism for adjusting them is a little clunky.

The engine tone is good, although a little rough in the cabin.

The only things I would change about the Audi are:

Glass Rear Window
Wider Wheels
Cup Holders!
Better Brakes.

A beautiful car with timeless style built like a tank. Recommended to anyone who wants to looks good and travel in style and comfort.

The car eats the miles in superb style and comfort, perhaps some may initially find the seat a bit firm but on long journeys they remain supportive. The electric seat adjusters coupled with the steering wheel adjustment should enable all drivers to find comfort. The Climate control is exceptional and effective for both front and rear passengers. The ICE system is better than some have at home with 8 speakers offering superb and variable sound for all types of music.

Steering is precise and light as is the gear shift. The ABS breaking and accurate steering makes the driver confident in all conditions. Visibility is superb. The 1.8 Turbo engine suffers from slight Turbo lag, but once it kicks in, is extremly effective comfortably capable of cruising all day at 90mph with rapid aceleration to 115mph when called to do so.

The on board computer is accurate and with the fully adjustable red lighting to the dash and other switches including the internal door handles is relaxing yet effective.

The boot is huge and with the collapsible rear seats allow for large loads with ease.

Average MPG is around 32 but can increase to 35 over long distances provided you are light on your right foot. The car is now 8 yeas old and looks new both inside and outside and remains a pleasure to own and drive.

Front disks and Pads at 105,000

Catalytic converter at 106,000

Front drivers door light switch replaced

Cooling flask cracked.
