Subaru Forester 2.5L 4 cylinder Automatic 2008 (81/100)

Subaru finally listened to its customers and has lengthened the Forester to add almost 4 inches of legroom for the back passengers. They maintained the fantastic fuel economy while increasing horsepower and torque slightly. This car is quieter, more comfortable and spacious than previous Forester models. They also lowered the price from last year!

Did I mention that it is incredibly smooth and fun to drive?

I owned the 97 Forester and kept it for 3 years before I had to get rid of it because the leg room in the back was prohibitive for my then 7 year old daughter. Other than that, the 97 Forester, while being a bit homely, was a flawless performer. This included as far as reliability went as well.

When I heard the 2009 would increase the leg room, I immediately went out and drove one. Much to my surprise Subaru completely redesigned the car inside and out, as well as in the suspension, and with changes to the mechanical features also. The back seat has plenty of room for me and my long-legged family to sit in comfort with room to spare before our knees touch the back of the front seats in the fully pushed back position.

They also now allow the back seats to recline 4 inches back (the earlier models' suspension did not allow for this).

The overall size is slightly larger while holding on to it's "car" status (which really helps with insurance costs).

The reliability of the Forester (still built in Japan) has been constantly in the "above average" category and I expect this one to be the same.

I will post more as we put more miles on it, but I am delighted to have the privilege of posting the first review of the 2009 Subaru Forester.

An absolutely superb car. Vastly underated, still has really mean aggressive low squat look to it, and it's not just show. This car goes as well as it looks. There are faster cars around Subaru Imprezas, Mitsi-Evos.the list goes on. But if you want a great all rounder, with a quality interior (this does not apply to any rally bred homoloation car-sorry, but just try comparing the leather interior of a VR6 to one of those). The handling is superb, you can really push this car around corners. The engine sounds terrific when you are in the mood, and reliabilty is excellent. Like I said a superb all rounder, and relative exclusivity. Please enjoy!

While Land Rover put many cheap parts in the interior of this car, I love the way it handles and the drivers seat was so comfortable that I could make long rides without any discomfort. Prior to all this hassle with Land Rover's inability to address the problem, I loved my car and was planning to buy the Sport model next year. Now I will never buy another.

Gearbox shifting late and spontaneously down-shifting. Over three weeks later this dealership is frustrated with working on it and it is returned.

Same day it is returned, gearbox repeats same issues late at night in the middle of no where after returning the rental. Taken to third dealership. Just got the car back today and am afraid to drive it for fear of breaking down along the road with the kids.

I have less than 4 thousand miles on the warranty. The tow truck that dropped it off said the engine sounded horrible and he is right. No dealership will touch it for a trade in toward a reliable vehicle. I am still making payments. Customer service listened yet did nothing else.

This is a great car. The 5 cylinder has plenty of power and the handling is better than similar cars. The design is a classic, very unique; cuts into the rear headroom a little, but whatever. My only slight problem with the car is that I wish it handled better. (It handles well, but I am looking for more) Maybe I will upgrade suspension later on. I know VW has had some reliability problems in the past, but I honestly think that these redesigns will be Volkswagen's savior.

When I bought this car, I thought that it was the greatest car of all time. I still love this car. I love the way it handles, the way it looks, all the features, and the power. But I have had so many problems with it. Thankfully they were fixed under warranty, but this latest problem has me pulling my hair out.

I have had this problem since about 90000 miles. The suspension or something squeaks loudly every time the car bounces. Sometimes even the smallest bounce is noisy. The dealer mis-diagnosed the problem and said that the shocks needed to be replaced. I replaced both shocks and springs, and it still squeaks whenever the car bounces. It is really annoying. The car is in another shop right now trying to locate the problem. I hope they find it. I can't enjoy the car if it's squeaking all the time.

All the following problems occurred between 26000 and 100000 miles. I had a 100K warranty so almost all work was covered.

The speed sensor became faulty. It was replaced under warranty.

Driver's side seat heater stopped working. Replaced under warranty.

Passenger side inside door handle wouldn't work, because the inner cable broke. Replaced under warranty.

Radiator top tank had a leak. Fixed under warranty.

Automatic climate control unit was faulty. Replaced under warranty.

Rear Speakers/grill rattled. Fixed/replaced twice.

Glove box dampener mechanism broke several times. Fixed under warranty.

Alarm actuator within door locks went faulty several times. Replaced/fixed under warranty.

Rear windows' seals came loose. Dealer re-glued, but they came loose again and again. Dealer would not resolve the source of the problem.

Rear suspension is very noisy. Squeaks anytime I go over speed bumps or whenever the car moves over any uneven road surface. Dealer mis-diagnosed the problem. Said that a shock was leaking. Replaced shocks and springs. Shock was not leaking. Still very noisy.
